Angels to the Animals is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization based out of Denver, North Carolina.
Angels to the Animals is committed to encouraging and educating owners about creating a nurturing and humane environment for their pets, as well as finding loving, permanent homes for surrendered pets. Our mission is to protect and advocate for pets in need, and to build a humane community that promotes compassion, kindness and a clear opportunity for quality life beyond chained, forgotten
and neglected animals in Lincoln County, NC.
Our team of volunteers provides frequent and consistent on-site care, including food and water, shelter and straw, proper veterinary care like vaccinations, flea and tick control, heartworm testing and treatment, spay and neuter, as well as toys, and treats.
Of course, all of this is accompanied by lots of love.
How Strangers Found Each Other ... And Found a Bigger Purpose
In June 2021, Denver, NC resident Jo Zarnoch met Mickey Mack as she attempted to retrieve her friends’ two dogs who had escaped through an open gate. They began sharing stories, and bonded immediately over their love for animals.
Mickey has a calling to save animals. On a weekly basis for the last six years, using his social security savings, he has provided food and water, fresh straw and shelter to many abused, neglected, sad and chained dogs in Lincoln County.
Jo made a promise to Mickey that he would never be alone again in his journey to help animals, and nicknamed him “Angel” from the beginning. Jo and her friend, Deb Fugate, organized two food drives. With the help of the NextDoor community site, the response was overwhelming.
Melissa Lang was one person who showed up, and within a week, she was helping Mickey with on-site care for ten dogs and a pot belly pig. Instead of finding these chained dogs, mostly pit bulls, to be mean and aggressive, she found them to be loving and appreciative.
Mickey, Jo, Deb and Melissa joined together to create Angels to the Animals with the mission of helping needy animals
by doing whatever they could to make their day a little brighter. That was just the beginning!
The Core Team
The core team of volunteers quickly doubled in size. Angels to the Animals recognizes that while the work may seem endless and heartbreaking at times, the resulting joy in seeing a transformed, furry face and happy tail – on what once was a broken soul – is well worth it.
If you would like to join us in our mission by becoming a volunteer or foster, please submit an application, and Angels to the Animals will promptly follow up with you. Thank you in advance for your generosity in helping to give better lives to these sweet souls.
Every little bit helps!

PET FOOD ASSISTANCE PROGRAMS:
Paws n Plates – provides food to on-site animals at their homes for folks who are unable to care for their pets. Besides food, volunteers provide shelter, straw in winter, fresh water, monthly flea-tick and heartworm preventative, all accompanied with walks and love.
Pawsitively Provisioned– provides monthly dog and cat food to our elderly and impoverished neighbors who need a helping hand to feed their pets. This is all because of the generosity of individual donors and food drives.
Paw Pantry Program– provides East Christian Lincoln Ministries and Denver Wesleyan Church regularly with bags of dog food for their food pantry programs.

We offer a variety of opportunities for individuals, groups, scout troops, schools and businesses to get involved and make a difference in the lives of those we serve.

Thank you for considering our request to create a more compassionate and animal-friendly community together.
Heart of the Carolinas–We collaborate with this incredible Lincoln County nonprofit to build free fencing for our neighbors who have dogs on chains or don’t have a place for their dogs to run. Angels to the Animals provides spay/neuter, vaccinations and necessary medical treatments. Our volunteers provide their love and their time to help build.
Boys Scouts–We collaborate with Cub Scout Troop 97 in supplying instructions and materials for the Coolers for Cats Program in making shelters for our feral cat colonies throughout Lincoln County. Angels to the Animals has also been the grateful recipient of two Eagle Scout projects.
Lincoln Charter School–We are incredibly grateful for their dedicated on-going school-year food drive, a huge success for our animals with a goal of 10,000 lbs. of dog and cat food.
Neighborhood Food Drives–We work closely with local neighborhoods to organize and execute pet food drives. This collaborative effort ensures we can collect essential supplies to support pets in need within our community. Holiday Food Drive–We collaborated in December 2024 with eleven local Denver businesses for drop-off food donations at their businesses. The food drive was a success, resulting in substantial donations and generating vital community awareness to our mission. Local Businesses–We appreciate the commitment of local businesses to our mission and their invaluable support in hosting our adoption efforts and fundraisers.
RESCUED and found loving homes for 150 cats and 76 dogs
FOSTERED over 380 animals
SPAYED/NEUTERED over 300 cats, and 54 dogs
PROVIDED VETERINARY CARE to over 275 animals including heartworm treatments, flea/tick control, vaccines, emergency and other critical surgeries
PROVIDED WEEKLY ONSITE CARE for 18-21 dogs and 6-8 large colonies of cats

Looking back at 2022, our first full year, we RESCUED and SAVED fifty-three dogs, including four new mamas with their litters!” We found “Mama Mia” the day before she delivered eight pups, and another who had just delivered that morning.
The majority of dogs we helped were tied to trees, living their lives on heavy chains. Neglected, lonely, hungry, trying to stay warm in the cold of winter or cool in the summer heat with limited or no shelter, we loved them back to health with food, water, housing, toys, and lots of love. Many went on to find wonderful homes with caring families.
Without help from volunteers, vets and medical staff; donations of food, supplies and funding; fosters and, of course, adopters, none of this would have happened. And very special thanks to Happy Tails Rescue, Inc. and Passion 4 Paws-VT, both of whom were instrumental in finding homes for many.
Happy lives, sweet babies — we love every single one of you!
Enjoy the photos of these rescued dogs in their new lives.
